Lace and Bobbins - ~ a history and collector's guide

"The pillow-lace maker weaves threads between pins on na cushion, the threads being wound on bobbins, and over a hundred bobbins might be used for the more complex patterns.  Sometimes each bobbin had it's own shape or inscription in the form of a phrase of anguish, love, religious belief, social comment, and so on................... Not surprisingly collecting bobbins is now a recognised field of activity.  In this book the author provides information for the collector of lace bobbins - the different materials from which they were made (bone, wood, pewter, glass, etc), and their different ornamentation and inscriptions.   The author's outline of the history of lacemaking provides the background to enable the reader to understand bobbins more fully."
